Why the 17th character decides the glass

One truncated or mistyped VIN can still look like the right badge. The wholesaler hears "same Golf, rain sensor" and pulls a common rack code. The camera bracket, acoustic layer, or HUD coating does not match this build. Comeback. Recalibration. Margin gone.

The VIN is the build fingerprint. Consumer decoders stop at make/model/year. European glass shops need the orderable IDs: ARGIC eurocode for the counter, OE part number as the second witness (OE part number vs ARGIC eurocode). Neither comes out clean if the VIN you pasted was 16 characters, had a space, or swapped 0 and O.

Tape this habit next to the phone: validate the VIN first, then look up the glass.

Where to read the VIN (and what not to use)

Prefer sources you can count with your finger:

1. Windscreen / dashboard plate (visible through the glass on most cars) — count carefully; glare and tint hide characters.
2. Driver door jamb / B-pillar sticker — often clearer than the dash plate.
3. Registration / insurance papers — useful backup; still verify against the vehicle when you can.

Do not treat these as a VIN substitute for ordering:

• Make/model/year from a customer text
• A photo of the old glass with a partial etch you cannot read
• A US NAGS number from a foreign tool (NAGS vs ARGIC— European shops order on ARGIC eurocode)
• Licence plate alone — plate→glass is still coming soon; do not wait on it for today's job

If the vehicle is in the bay, read the VIN from the car. If it is a phone quote, make the customer spell all 17 characters back to you.

The bay checklist: 17 characters, clean and complete

1. Count to 17 — exactly seventeen characters. Not 16. Not 18. If you have fewer, you are missing a digit; if you have more, you pasted a space, dash, or extra field.
2. Strip separators — remove spaces, dots, and hyphens. The lookup field wants a continuous 17-character string.
3. Reject I, O, and Q — modern VINs do not use the letters I, O, or Q (they collide with 1 and 0). If you "see" one, you are almost certainly misreading 1, 0, or another lookalike.
4. Check the usual OCR / handwriting swaps — 0↔O, 1↔I↔L, 8↔B, 5↔S, 2↔Z. Read once from the plate, once from your ticket, out loud.
5. Confirm positions 1–3 and the plant/serial feel plausible — you are not decoding the whole VIN here; you are catching obvious paste errors from the wrong vehicle or a truncated SMS.
6. Second pair of eyes on ADAS jobs — camera, rain/light sensor, HUD, acoustic, heat. If the glass will need calibration, a second person recounts the 17 characters before order (ADAS windshield identification).
7. Only then run glass lookup — paste the clean VIN into AutoglassPortal and take eurocode + OE onto the quote and the PO.

Common VIN failures that order the wrong windshield

Wrong windshields rarely start with a bad wholesaler. They start with a ticket that never held a clean 17-character VIN.

After the checklist: eurocode + OE, not make/model

Once the VIN is clean:

1. Run a glass lookup — not a consumer VIN decode.
2. Copy the ARGIC eurocode (European order language — see ARGIC eurocode explained).
3. Copy the OE / OEM part number when returned — second witness on the PO (OE vs ARGIC).
4. Say the option stack out loud against the old glass if it is still in: camera bracket, sensors, acoustic, HUD, heat.
5. Do not translate a NAGS code for a European counter.
